He will pay zero attention to that.

For some reason, probably because Augustine initiated the discourse on "predestination" -- Paul's predestination was something quite different -- and because he battled the Pelagians who were into "works," Calvin decided to adopt him as a precursor of sorts. White is just parroting that. It's all somewhat arbitrary, because Calvin also quoted St. Bernard of Clairvaux quite a bit, but the online "Reformed" and old Reformed opinion-makers like Spurgeon never took to Bernard (probably too Marian).

But, again, Augustine is just someone they nod to for "traditional" reasons. They have no idea what he really taught and no interest in finding out, other than perusing a few anthologies of poorly translated Augustinian excerpts on predestination and Pelagianism.

By White's idiotic standards, Augustine himself would be a Pelagian, strange as that is for the guy who singlehandedly identified and labeled the heresy in the first place. I mean, you'd think that Augustine should be able to define what a Pelagian was, if anyone, but no......Adomnanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15746373228302022418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-82540939410849706552010-01-26T17:23:46.846-05:002010-01-26T17:23:46.846-05:00Thanks much on both counts, Nick.
