As a convert to Catholicism from a Calvinistic background, I have surprisingly found more emphasis in the Catholic church on having a personal relationship with God than I found in my calvinistic churches. For one thing, having to search my heart and name each and every mortal sin and confess it was hugely freeing. In my previous churches, I felt a constant pressure to fit in by proving that I was a "true believer." If I ever confessed my real sins, I felt it would seem obvious to everyone that I wasn't a "real Christian" and had never been "truly converted." So I did what any person who wanted friends would do - I hid my sins from everyone around me.
Additionally, there was a big emphasis within Presbyterianism upon the corporate & communal aspect of the faith, which is a good thing, properly placed. However, I found that in a practical way, this sometimes caused a de-emphasis on the validity of personal experiences with God.
Protestant converts come to Catholicism from both sides - from traditions which emphasize personal experience at the expense of accuracy & truth and also traditions which are concerned with doctrinal purity at the expense of personal experience.Ashleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10759671732010933116noreply@blogger.com
