But I am sure you are aware that that the official Anglican teaching on the matter is to found in chapter xxii of the Book of Common Prayer which says that "The Romish Doctrine concerning Purgatory, Pardons, Worshipping and Adoration, as well of Images as of Relics, and also Invocation of Saints, is a fond thing, vainly invented, and grounded upon no warranty of Scripture, but rather repugnant to the Word of God”.

Yes, it appears that C.S. Lewis who was an Anglican, believed in some form of purgatory but again not in the way that Rome teaches. For Lewis, and others, purgatory was the means by which God completes his cleansing work in us burning away our iniquities and making us fit to be present in the Kingdom of God. However, C.S. Lewis was not dogmatic on the issue and in any event he never suggests the “treasury of merit” indulgences, and the idea that the Church can dispense excess grace in order to bring a soul onward out of torment. Nor is there any language in Lewis’ description about punishment and in this respect is much closer to the Orthodox view. His purgatory is purely a cleansing, all satisfaction having been made upon the cross.Reformerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04410516910134615224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-89091475887827421662013-06-12T02:14:31.973-04:002013-06-12T02:14:31.973-04:00Thanks again, Dave, for your work.
