He'll put a great deal of effort into taking a child's question seriously, even.

It's the people who really aren't all that good and often, who aren't all that interested in their own field of choice, who get sniffy about only deigning to discuss these matters with properly qualified persons. And they usually also find excuses not to talk with even the most qualified folks. It's a joyless sort of life to live, really, because academia's great joy is finding stuff out, telling people about it, and then thrashing out the connected issues; or in getting people interested and then teaching them to find stuff out and tell people about it, and in thrashing stuff out with them. Everything else is just grading papers and faculty meeting purgatory.

If you're not planning to stay in academia, the only reason to get a degree is to gain more experience in finding stuff out and telling people about it and thrashing it out -- on the principle that you intend to bring that sort of thing into your paying work, and want your brain awoken to it first.

So far, yon man is only interested in pontificating. He seems to spend all his time avoiding finding things out or thrashing things out, and it doesn't sound like he's actually interested in telling people information so much as non-information.

But maybe it's just a bad day for him.Bansheehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12594214770417497135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-58816445374023286912009-07-20T12:40:45.407-04:002009-07-20T12:40:45.407-04:00Dave,
It would appear that “Prof.” Hays feels that...Dave,
It would appear that “Prof.” Hays feels that no one can read an academics work and gain anything out of it or be able to understand it at all unless they are as educated as an academic. Since academics rarely agree on anything that they write anyway, that would mean that the work becomes useless to anyone that really matters.

I would really be interested in Jesus’ credentials to criticise the Jewish faith and higher echelon of “academics” of his time. Or was carpentry enough to qualify him to be a worthy critic. Is it possible Jesus just didn’t understand them because he didn’t have their broad range of education?

It seems to me that if we understand the English language and have a fair meaning of the words we can surely form an opinion as to whether or not some “academic” who writes in that language is right or wrong. If the opinion is considered incorrect by the “academic” it remains for him or another academic to debate the issue as to that persons understanding. It is not a question of whether that person has the right to critique the academics work or not, or if he/she is educated enough to do so. Let the chips fall where they may. If the academic is wrong he/she is wrong no matter who determines it.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01748151826210896007noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-91563504513493642382009-07-20T12:04:15.658-04:002009-07-20T12:04:15.658-04:00Thanks, Michael.

But for that, the discussion wouldn't have even gotten off the ground. And I think there are more than likely aspects of petty jealousy involved too.Dave Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07771661758539438173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-32736010309284668172009-07-20T09:55:49.726-04:002009-07-20T09:55:49.726-04:00I thought I would provide some help for the defini...I thought I would provide some help for the definition impaired people you are arguing with:
Apologist: A person who uses rational arguments to defend a cause.
Professional,: A person who receives payment for work performed in a chosen profession.
Catholic:A member of the Catholic Church also know as a Roman Catholic.
Putting them all together we come up with the definition for, Professional Catholic Apologist: A Catholic who uses rational arguments to defend Catholocism and receives income from this work.
Now lets see who can fit this description here;could it be D.A.? Yes, I believe D.A. Would be a good guess, unless he is doing this for free, then he would be called an "Amateur Catholic Apologist."
I really don't see what's so hard about this, especially given that your adversaries are very intelligent men.
Nice job per usual Dave.Michael Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07873032230355969260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-59734482768251872042009-07-19T17:18:52.962-04:002009-07-19T17:18:52.962-04:00LOL I forgot about that. Yeah, I think I'll do my doctoral dissertation on "the Trinity" like Bishop White did, and then I'll be accepted and admired by these naysayers.

Note: I added at the end Calvin's own descriptions of his work as introductory-level material for the masses: pretty much a training manual.Dave Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07771661758539438173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-24697158981164914282009-07-19T16:38:48.011-04:002009-07-19T16:38:48.011-04:00Come now, Dave. If only you had an advanced degree from, let's say, a back-room or strip-mall University, these online champions of Reformed theology would have no choice but to bask in your intellectual glow.

I got mine. I'm now going for dental hygienist & air conditioning repair double-major. I'll be a triple threat!Tom Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14132505848236638286noreply@blogger.com
