Webster said, according to Mr. Sponburg, that Basil appealed to tradition only to support "liturgical customs" but not to establish any doctrine.

I pointed out that, for Catholics, there is no liturgical custom that does not embody or reflect a teaching. Therefore, Webster's dichotomizing "liturgical custom" and "dogma" as two exclusive, non-overlapping categories does not hold for us.

It would be absurd, after all, for Webster to ask Catholics to treat liturgical customs as meaningless, but they would in fact be meaningless if they were not the visible expression of some idea; i.e., doctrine.

Liturgy is the primary vehicle of sacred tradition. We cannot exclude liturgy in assessing the doctrinal content of tradition, as Webster does.Adomnanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15746373228302022418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-42092159806875694552013-11-09T21:23:10.030-05:002013-11-09T21:23:10.030-05:00Likely will in due course if they massively distor...Likely will in due course if they massively distort it like they did with St. Cyril (today's entry).Dave Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07771661758539438173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-59730730947219141732013-11-09T20:52:38.212-05:002013-11-09T20:52:38.212-05:00Please address Webster's claims about Basil...Please address Webster's claims about Basil's understanding of tradition.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16294571008244780190noreply@blogger.com
