Tha...Hi Dave- I've enjoyed reading your site.

Thanks!

I had a few questions for you about the "150 reasons." Would you be able to go into more detail about this one?:

31. Evangelicalism's "techniques" of evangelism are often contrived and manipulative, certainly not directly derived from the text of the Bible. Some even resemble brainwashing to a degree. [I speak as a former street and campus and counter-cult evangelist myself, who avoided these techniques then, as I do now]

I'd love to hear more about what you mean.

Well, first of all, it is a very general statement. I wasn't knocking evangelism per se; heavens no! I was an evangelist myself as a Protestant and still am one to some degree now.

What I meant was instances when the technique of trying to "get someone saved" becomes an end in itself. Our expertise at persuasion is not what transforms hearts. That is God and His grace.

Sometimes there is use of Madison Avenue techniques to try to achieve a "sale": as if the destiny of an eternal soul was a matter of doing the equivalent of a carnival barker's routine.

As a Catholic, I reject the notion that someone is saved in one instant anyway. They can rededicate themselves to Christ but that is not salvation.

Particularly in Arminian evangelicalism, there is the notion that if you do something: say the sinner's prayer, etc., this is the moment of salvation. The Calvinists have a little better understanding of that, I think: that it is ultimately up to God. We actually agree with that, yet without denying human free will.

Also used at times are emotional sorts of techniques that get a person worked up into a frenzy so that they will make an emotional plea of accepting the gospel or Jesus, etc. I did this myself in 1969 at a Baptist church. I don't say it was worthless or a bad thing, but I say that it is not entirely valid, because the gospel is not mere emotionalism.

I also don't condemn the motivations and intent of most of those who use these techniques. I think it is mostly an unthinking thing, brought on by the evangelical ethos and environment.

Also, can you tell me more about the foundations for celibacy for priests as opposed to Protestant pastors (who are usually married with families)? Thank you!

I've written at length about the rationale for celibacy, on my Church web page (second to last last section):

http://socrates58.blogspot.com/2006/11/church-index-page.htmlDave Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07771661758539438173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-24568632433937703732009-11-06T10:28:58.674-05:002009-11-06T10:28:58.674-05:00Hi Benji,
