And if I might go a bit afield ...

I can’t resist the opportunity of mentioning here just how wondrous our age really is. Why, we’ve even begun to restore limited sight to the blind! Imagine!

Examples:

Technology Behind Second Sight Retinal Prosthesis (w/video).

And my post over at Beggarsall here.

And with regard to the poster who took issue with my speaking of the “miracles of science” well, I wonder if he would take issue with a certain Archon Genomics X-Prize foundation video?

Excerpting from said vid at 3:24 – 4:40 (my emphasis):

“The X-Prize foundation has set its sights on a new target, one closer to home – a breakthrough that will transform medicine and change the world.

“What if we could obtain personalized, preventive medical treatment, to attack disease before it strikes? What if we could understand the genetic links to diseases like Alzheimer’s and heart disease, and take huge steps in finding cures?

“Imagine a world where cancer and diabetes are just a memory; where children are born guaranteed extra years of healthy life; where medicine become proactive, personalized, powerful in ways we can only now dream about.

“How do we ignite this revolution? The genome is a map of the DNA that resides at the center of every one of our cells, containing instructions for everything our bodies do. Four chemicals are arranged into a unique blueprint for each individual, stored in a molecular pattern three billion pairs long, determining everything from the color of our eyes, to the structure of our organs, to the make-up of our bloodstream. It’s a miraculous system.”

Archon X-PRIZE for Genomics

So there! (take it up with the throwbacks at the X-Prize foundation!). ;) LOL!

Anyway, for my part, I'll continue to speak of “miracles of science” and “miracles of creation.” And speaking of the latter, check out this beautiful vid (suggest volume up, full screen!):

BioVisions - The Inner Life of the Cell and the Wikipedia entry: The Inner Life of the Cell.

(Don’t know enough cell biology to identify all the events depicted, but if anyone's wondering, that strange and intriguing “walking” object seen at 1:17 and reappearing again at about 2:08, is a type of “motor protein” known as a Kinesin ).

But I digress.

Getting back to Terri Schiavo…

Let me just end by saying that my hope, my prayer, is that someday, somehow, with all the incredible technological advances being made, there will also be one that will bring hope - and who knows, perhaps even healing - to all the poor Terri Schiavo’s of this world!Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16971132944684765473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6422857.post-80172758662157167022010-02-06T00:26:39.261-05:002010-02-06T00:26:39.261-05:00Thanks for the info. The article below I found quite astounding...Dave,

The article below I found quite astounding.

Of course, how it might ultimately relate to the tragic cases such as that of poor Terri Schiavo only time - and further research into anoxic brain injuries (anoxic encephalopathy) - will tell.

A couple of excerpts:

(AP) Feb. 3, 2010 – “Scientists have detected glimmers of awareness in some vegetative brain-injury patients and have even communicated with one of them - findings that push the boundaries of how to assess and care for such people.”

“They [medical researchers] also noted that the positive signals appeared only in people with traumatic brain injury - not in patients whose brains had been deprived of oxygen, as can happen when the heart stops. Terri Schiavo, the vegetative woman at the center of a national controversy before her feeding tube was removed and she was allowed to die in 2005, suffered oxygen deprivation.”

Patient presumed vegetative communicates via brain scan: study .Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16971132944684765473noreply@blogger.com
